Most of this paper will deal with carbon as it is the only direct dating method applicable to parietal art although it is limited to charcoal drawings. In most cases, these methods provide a minimum age, a terminus ante quem that can be far removed from the archeological reality, as deposits can form quite late on and in an intermittent way.

The dating of remains is essential in archaeology, in order to place finds in correct relation to one another, and to understand what was present in the experience of any human being at a given time and place. Inscribed objects sometimes bear an explicit date, or preserve the name of a dated individual. In such cases, dating might seem easy. However, only a small number of objects are datable by inscriptions, and there are many specific problems with Egyptian chronology, so that even inscribed objects are rarely datable in absolute terms.

In the archaeology of part-literate societies, dating may be said to operate on two levels: the absolute exactness found in political history or ‘history event-by-event’, and the less precise or relative chronology, as found in social and economic history, where life can be seen to change with less precision over time. The contrast might also be drawn between two ‘dimensions’, the historical, and the archaeological, corresponding roughly to the short-term and long-term history envisaged by Fernand Braudel.

On the one level, events and individuals are placed in an absolute chronology: the exact years and sometimes even months and days of the events and biographies are known. On the other level, the exact years may not be known, but it is known that one feature is earlier or later in relation to another; this is typically the case on an excavation, where the different archaeological strata allow objects found to be placed in a relative historical framework.

There are several different methods. In stratigraphy , archaeologists assume that sites undergo stratification over time, leaving older layers beneath newer ones. Archaeologists use that assumption, called the law of superposition, to help determine a relative chronology for the site itself.

Then, they use contextual clues and absolute dating techniques to help point to the age of the artifacts found in each layer.

While typological dating has been practised for over a century, it is more difficult with pre-Roman pottery, where different types are often less distinctive and there are no coins or historical records to help contextualise them.

Previously, radiocarbon analysis could help to date pottery finds only indirectly, by establishing the age of bones or other organic materials buried with them, but the new method allows for dating of the pots themselves using fatty acids from food residues — perhaps from milk or cheese — which have been absorbed by their porous clay during cooking. Other sources of carbon associated with pottery, such as the organic temper which occasionally survives firing, or superficial food crusts, were also considered for radiocarbon dating, but these are rare and prone to contamination.

Phytoliths can occlude some organic carbon during their deposition in plants. This carbon fraction is recognised as an ideal dating material because of its high resistance to decomposition and post-deposition contamination at the time of phytolith formation. However, the reliability of phytolith radiocarbon dating has recently been questioned.

But while the difficulties of single life may be intractable, the challenge of determining the age of prehistoric artifacts and fossils is greatly aided by measuring certain radioactive isotopes. Radiocarbon dating — a key tool used for determining the age of prehistoric samples — is about to get a major update. For the first time in seven years, the technique is due to be recalibrated using a slew of new data from around the world. The work combines thousands of data points from tree rings, lake and ocean sediments, corals and stalagmites, among other features, and extends the time frame for radiocarbon dating back to 55, years ago — 5, years further than the last calibration update in Archaeologists are downright giddy.

Although the recalibration mostly results in subtle changes, even tiny tweaks can make a huge difference for archaeologists and paleo-ecologists aiming to pin events to a small window of time.
